How Architects Use AI in Design and Documentation

Architects are already using AI, but usually not in the way a dramatic rendering suggests. The most useful applications are often practical: organizing information, comparing options and finding problems earlier.

Early research and project setup

At the beginning of a project, an architect may use AI to sort a client's requirements, summarize a meeting or create a checklist of questions. It can also help compare public information from zoning, code and product sources. The architect still has to verify the source, date and jurisdiction before relying on the result.

Testing design options

AI image tools can quickly test materials, massing or interior character. They are useful for asking, “What if the siding were darker?” or “How would this room feel with more daylight?” Computational tools can also generate and compare many arrangements.

The output is not automatically a design decision. A good option still has to fit the site, structure, budget, zoning, code and way the owner will use the building.

Documentation and coordination

During documentation, AI can help search specifications, check repeated information, draft routine notes and flag possible inconsistencies. It can reduce time spent on repetitive work. It cannot safely assume that two projects use the same detail or that a generic answer matches the adopted code.

Coordination remains especially important where architectural drawings meet structural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing work. A missed opening, ceiling conflict or equipment clearance can become expensive in the field.

What remains the architect's job

The architect must understand the project, communicate with the client and exercise professional judgment. According to NCARB's current position, AI is a tool and only a licensed practitioner may seal and take legal responsibility for technical submissions. The AIA also recommends policies for privacy, transparency, oversight and responsible use.

Clients should expect AI to improve parts of the process, not to remove accountability. BAWI uses technology to support careful project work while keeping verified conditions and human review at the center.
