House Siding Types: Wood, Vinyl, Fiber Cement, Composite, and More

House siding affects appearance, maintenance and how the exterior wall handles rain. The right choice depends on the building, budget, exposure and details around windows, roofs and grade.

Wood siding

Wood clapboard, shingles and board-and-batten have a natural appearance and can be repaired in small areas. They need a durable finish and periodic maintenance. Wood also absorbs moisture, so back ventilation, clearances and end-grain protection matter.

Vinyl siding

Vinyl is widely available and generally requires little painting or routine maintenance. It expands and contracts, so fastening and trim accessories must allow movement. Its profile creates some drainage, but the wall still needs a continuous water-resistive layer and flashing behind it.

Fiber cement

Fiber-cement siding, including products commonly called Hardie siding, can imitate lap boards, panels or shingles. It is heavier than vinyl and depends on correct cutting, fastening, clearances and finish maintenance. Manufacturer instructions and wind requirements should be followed.

Engineered wood and composite siding

Engineered wood combines wood fibers or strands with resins and factory finishes. Other composite products use polymers, minerals or multiple materials. Performance and installation vary widely, so compare the evaluation report, warranty, fastening and repair method for the exact product.

Metal, stucco and masonry veneer

Metal panels can provide crisp lines and long service when seams and dissimilar metals are detailed properly. Stucco and brick or stone veneer are durable finishes but absorb or admit some water. Drainage cavities, flashings and weeps are part of the wall system.

Window and door trim

Common trim choices include painted wood, cellular PVC, fiber cement, aluminum wrapping and manufacturer-specific vinyl accessories. Trim thickness must work with the siding profile and window projection. Head flashing, sill drainage and the connection to the wall's water-control layer are more important than caulk alone.

Compare the complete wall, not just the siding

Before re-siding, inspect sheathing, housewrap, flashing, insulation and existing damage. Replacing windows at the same time changes trim and water-management details.
