Construction Drawing Types: Architectural, Site, Structural, MEP and Fire Alarm

A construction set may contain several drawing disciplines. Each one describes a different part of the project, and the set must be coordinated so the systems fit together.

Survey and site drawings

A property survey documents boundaries and visible site conditions. A site or civil plan shows proposed buildings, grading, drainage, utilities, paving, curb cuts and other improvements. Depending on the project, a landscape architect or civil engineer may prepare additional site sheets.

Architectural drawings

Architectural sheets organize the overall project. They commonly include code and zoning information, demolition plans, floor plans, reflected ceiling plans, roof plans, elevations, sections, wall types, schedules and details. Sheet names often begin with A, but office and agency standards vary.

Structural drawings

Structural sheets show foundations, framing, columns, beams, bearing walls and connections. They also include design criteria and schedules. A structural plan should be read with the architectural plan because openings, stairs and equipment loads affect both.

Mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings

Mechanical drawings describe heating, cooling, ventilation, ductwork and equipment. Plumbing drawings show water, sanitary, gas and sometimes storm systems. Electrical drawings cover power, lighting, panels, circuits and controls. These may be separate filings or contractor permits depending on the jurisdiction and scope.

Fire protection and fire alarm

Sprinkler, standpipe and other fire-protection drawings may be prepared by a qualified engineer or licensed contractor as allowed by the reviewing agency. Fire-alarm drawings show devices, notification, control equipment and system connections. Life-safety information must agree across disciplines.

Other specialty drawings

Large or technical projects may add telecom, security, audiovisual, kitchen, lighting, interiors, equipment or process drawings. A data-center project can have substantial electrical, controls and fire-protection packages even when the architectural changes appear limited.

Why coordination matters

A ceiling cannot be understood from the architectural plan alone if ducts, lights and sprinklers occupy the same space. The drawing list and responsibility matrix should make clear who prepares, files and seals each part.
